Twin brothers Ben and Michael Perl have always found success in life when they work together, and running a business has been no exception. In 2004, Ben Perl purchased a medical supply business with an existing customer base of ambulance companies and government agencies. With such high-volume clientele, Ben and his brother Michael quickly realized their new company’s purchasing power and expanded their sales to the general public. The brothers found eCommerce to be a successful platform.
Tapping into the Power of the Online ChannelAs business picked up, the Perl brothers were strapped for time and in need of a more efficient business model. They began Selling on Amazon in 2006 and found that the easy-to- use selling platform was just what their business needed. “After switching to Selling on Amazon, our internet sales exploded, jumping 175 percent from 2007 to 2009,” said Michael Perl, copresident, BP Medical.
Selling on Amazon has also helped BP Medical Supplies expand its reach to consumers who may be purchasing supplies to keep around their home, rather than solely catering to government agencies and ambulance companies.
A Reliable Route to the MassesWith the pandemic scare of swine influenza in early 2009, people around the world began ordering products to shield them from contracting the disease. In just six days in April 2009, BP Medical Supplies processed more than 20,000 orders for preventative medical supplies through Selling on Amazon. “This wouldn’t have happened through any other channel,” says Michael Perl. “It happened through Amazon because of their marketing power and reliability.”
The Value of the BundleBP Medical Supplies not only distributes hundreds of medical products, but is also a manufacturer of medical products and supplies. With many different elements to their business, they decided to leverage several of the Amazon Services programs– Selling on Amazon, Fulfillment by Amazon and Amazon WebStore–to maximize productivity and profitability. “Utilizing the Amazon Services bundle [lowers] expenses, [reduces] overhead and becomes a one-stop shop for our products,” says Michael Perl.
